Terracotta Lamp in the Form of a Gladiator's Helmet in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, June 2010

Terracotta Lamp in the Form of a Gladiator's Helmet in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, June 2010
Terracotta Lamp in the Form of a Gladiator's Helmet
Roman, mold-made, 1st half of the 2nd century AD

Accession # 24.219

In addition to a central crest, gladiators' helmets often had feathers attached above the ears. The holes for such ornaments are faithfully reproduced on this helmet-shaped lamp.

Text from the Metropolitan Museum of Art label.
