Bronze Statuette of a Drunken Herakles in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, February 2010

Bronze Statuette of a Drunken Herakles in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, February 2010
Bronze Statuette of a Drunken Herakles
Greek, Hellenistic, 3rd-2nd century BC
Said to be from Smyrna

Accession # 15.57

The hero lists back, clearly inebriated, his stomach bloated and the muscles of his legs taut as he tries to maintain balance. Based on analogy with other statutettes of this type, he may have held his club in his left hand and a kantharos (two-handled drinking cup) in his right.

Text from the Metropolitan Museum of Art label.
