Marble Bust of a Woman in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, July 2007

Marble Bust of a Woman in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, July 2007
Marble bust of a woman
Roman, Late Imperial period, mid-3rd century AD

Accession # 18.145.39

The subject of this extremely fine portrait wears her hair in a fashion associated with Otacilia Severa, wife of the emperor Philip the Arab (ruled 244-249 AD). The wavy hair is parted in the center, looped back over the ears to form a wide flat braid pinned to the back of the head.
