Archaistic Head of Athena in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, July 2007

Archaistic Head of Athena in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, July 2007
Marble head of Athena
Roman, Augustan or Julio-Claudian period, ca. 27 BC - 68 AD

Accession # 12.157

The goddess Athena is represented in an archaistic style, a decorative retrospective manner that incorporated stylistic characteristics of archaic Greek art of the sixth or early fifth century BC into newly created figures and compositions. The style flourished from the late second century BC onward, fulfilling a demand for decorative works based on the much admired art of the past.
