Bowl with Splashed and Incised Decoration in the Brooklyn Museum, March 2010

Bowl with Splashed and Incised Decoration in the Brooklyn Museum, March 2010
Bowl with Splash Motif

Within one hundred fifty years of the 'Abbasid Dynasty's conquest of Iran, semiautonomous dynasties had consolidated their power on the fringes of the empire. One such dynasty, the Samanids, gained ascendancy in Uzbekistan and Turkestan in the ninth century, spreading their influence to Khurasan in the tenth century. Excavations at Nishapur in Khurasan and Afrasiyab near Samarkand in Uzbekistan have unearthed a range of highly distinctive ceramics. This splash-sgraffiato ware bowl probably derives from similar wares made at the 'Abbasid capitals of Baghdad and Samarra.
