Antonio Canova (1757-1822)
Italian, born Possagno, active Venice and Rome, ca. 1822-23

Accession # 2003.21.2

Canova's first marble Paris, commisioned by Josephine Bonaparte in 1807, was bought after her death by Alexander I of Russia; it is now in the Hermitage, Saint Petersburg. This replica, believed to have been purchased from Canova's studio by the third marquess of Londonderry when he was visiting Rome in 1823, remained in Londonderry House in London, until 1962.
