Bowl with Pulviscolo Granulation

Period: 7th century BC (Orientalizing)

Medium: gold (Gold, Silver & Jewelry)

Accession Number: 57.372

Measurements: 4 1/8 x 5 9/16 x 2 7/16 in. (10.4 x 14.2 x 6.2 cm)

Geographies: Italy (Place of Origin)

The 7th and early 6th centuries BC are known as the Orientalizing period because of the many eastern, or "Oriental," elements in the art. In this prosperous era of international trade, Etruscan artists manufactured luxury goods, such as those seen in this case, that reflect influences from the art of the eastern Mediterranean. This bowl features friezes of geometric patterns and one of flying birds and an animal, perhaps a lion. The bowl's two horizontal loop handles and the hollow, crouching sphinxes on them are characteristically Etruscan.
