Bronze Statuette of Jupiter in the Getty Villa, July 2008

Bronze Statuette of Jupiter in the Getty Villa, July 2008
Statuette of Jupiter
Gallo-Roman, AD 100-200
Bronze

Inventory # 96.AB.42

This figure of Jupiter once held a thunderbolt and a scepter. The statuette was modeled after the life-size statue of Zeus Brontaios (the Thunderer) created by Greek sculptor Leochares in the mid-300s BC. In 22 BC Leochares' work was brought to Rome and placed in Jupiter's temple on the Capitoline Hil. Although the original has not survived, many copies still exist.
