Greek Statuette of a Fertility Goddess in the Getty Villa, July 2008

Greek Statuette of a Fertility Goddess in the Getty Villa, July 2008
Statuette of a Fertility Goddess
Greek, made in Boiotia, 600-575 BC
Terracotta

Inventory # 71.AD.132

Wearing a distinctively tall headdress and a necklace with a pomegrante pendant, this figure may be an early representation of Demeter. The worship of fertility goddesses has a long history in Greece. Thousands of clay statuettes such as this one have survived from the Archaic period (700-480 BC), many of them left at sanctuaries as dedications.
