Base for a Statuette in the Cloisters, October 2009

Base for a Statuette in the Cloisters, October 2009
Base for a Statuette
Ivory
North France or South Lowlands, early 16th century

Accession # 55.168

The two satirical scenes that decorate this base probably allude to themes of worldly love. One suggests the attraction between the sexes during courtship, while that on the other side alludes to infidelity after marriage. Moralistic themes of this sort were often inspired by late medieval secular dramas. The head of the man to the left of the fountain is a later replacement.

Text from the Cloisters label.
