Why on earth would I do that? Diffraction would make the image soft and the background would be annoyingly sharply in focus. I deliberately took the photo with a wide aperture to try and blur the background. No flash was used just available light.

Sorry, I think we misunderstand each other. But to clarify it, it would be advisable for you to click on the link above. Because that's what it's all about: making the disturbing background less prominent. Of course, it is also possible with an open aperture by increasing the exposure time by three light values.
