Wall painting in the Church of Panagia Drossiani
Wall painting in the Byzantne Church of Panagia Drossiani on the island of Naxos.
The image is of St George, whose face stares out eerily across the centuries. Behind George on the white horse sits a young boy carrying water. Beneath the horse is the dragon with a human head and face because, we were told, it represents evil. Perhaps the thinking here is akin to Dante's in the Inferno (Divine Comedy} in describing the character Geryon - his pleasant face hides the horror behind it..
