Cypripedium species

Today, I met two of my photography friends, Neil and Jen, at Panthertown Valley in North Carolina. Among other things, it is known among a few naturalists for its Pink Lady's-slipper Orchids. There are several locations within Panthertown Valley that host some rather large populations of this beautiful orchid. The light was absolutely awful, today. So, I decided to go with the flow and play around with it. I really like the luminous quality of the light shining through the pink lip of the orchids. It wasn't something I thought I would be happy with, but I believe it did turn out OK, after all...

Watch this space! In another month or so, I should be able to show you some gorgeous pink orchids that will spring from this small plant bud. I spent the better part of today driving around in the mountains of South Carolina checking on the progress of our spring wildflowers. Here are some beauties that I found today...

In addition, I'd like to know why it is positioned on the lip cleft where pollinators normally enter.
