These images were taken on part of a 6-hour adventure in the Southern Appalachians of the Carolinas. This particular spot was made known to me several years ago, and each year since, it has provided superb examples of relatively large groups of this beautiful orchid species. They are growing in open woods on a small section of north-facing, sloping forest. BTW, this is the first year that I've been able to detect their delicate, floral fragrance -- pure heaven! Hope you enjoy...

This morning, I made a trip to one of my favorite state Heritage Preserves in the upstate of South Carolina to catch the beginning of the Cypripedium acaule or Pink Lady's-slipper orchid bloom. I was not disappointed. They should be good for another week to ten days -- lots of plants still in bud. I then proceeded to Nine Tiimes Preserve for some other delights.

These images are the result of a very long day trip to the Pisgah National Forest and the Blue Ridge Parkway in western North Carolina. I was joined by Walter Ezell and Steve Baker, a friend from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
We found four orchid species (three of them in bloom) and a number of blooming Trillium species and hybrids, as well as some other very colorful Spring wildflowers. A great day for botanizing, indeed!

Day trip to look for Yellow Lady's-slipper orchids in nearby, DuPont State Forest near Cedar Mountain, North Carolina. Although we were just a bit late for the best of the Large Yellow Lady's-slipper orchids, we did find a few that were still holding on. We had much better luck with the Small Yellow Lady's-slipper orchids. We also made a side trip for Aplectrum hyemale or Puttyroot orchid, and we found a few pretty good ones.
