Epidendrum magnoliae (Green-fly orchid)

Several years ago, I went to a site near Charleston, South Carolina where I had seen Epidendrum magnoliae or Green-fly orchid in bloom during the month of July.

There had been a recent wind storm where limbs loaded with this orchid species had fallen to the ground. The limbs had already been cut up for firewood!

Seeing the orchids growing on the firewood, I "rescued" a single small limb and took it back home with me. It has bloomed every year since, and this year, it has just begun to bloom. It's nice to have a special native orchid to bloom in my front yard.
