Smardale Gill Viaduct
Smardale is the highest viaduct on the S&C railway, towering 131 feet over Scandal Beck, and built entirely of grey limestone.
Smardale Gill is one of the only two sites in England that’s home to the scotch argus butterfly. The tiny northern brown argus can also be seen here, I saw them but not well enough to photograph!
The vehicles seen on the viaduct are contractors vehicles just finishing a major refurb of the viaduct.
