I had a dream of fire

I had a dream of fire
Cut-paper collage created for Kollage Kit theme: "Dreams."

This isn't some random collage I shoehorned into the dream theme. Like so much of my work, this is personal. I'm bipolar, and for reasons I won't go into, I had a short-lived manic episode about 10 days ago. By the time I was tossing and turning in bed around 1 AM, I felt as though my brain was literally on fire. When I closed my eyes, I could see inside my cranium—nothing but flames. When I finally fell asleep, I had a dream of fire. Lots of fire.

The strange-looking liquid mass in the bottom middle was captioned "runoff from nickel mining." What I wanted was lava, 'cause there was a volcano in my dream. That's the closest I could find.

The fire thoughts lingered for days, but guess what: collage (and art in general, of course) is therapeutic. After I cut out and glued down all that fire, I felt cool as a cucumber. =smile=

Here is the opposite side of this postcard.

Well, damn! That's a powerful image!

I understand the curative powers of dreams & art very well. In fact my ongoing collage work has served as self-analysis to a large degree -- not that I necessarily sit down & consciously analyze it all that much -- but the act of creating something works through many things entirely of itself, I find.

(One project I've mulled over is a short book entitled "Midlife Dreams" using selected material from my dream journal of 2-3 very intense & transformative years in my life. I may yet get to it, too, as I've regained my writing impetus. Not only is a long-unfinished novel now racing to its conclusion, but others are demanding to be written -- and even some non-fiction like the dream book, something new to me.)

Interestingly, I've seldom turned dreams into collage, though that seems the most natural of things ... but I have written short-short stories that came to me well-plotted in dreams, needing only some fine-tuning & detailing on the page.

But making is art is in a very real sense dreaming while awake, after all ... a good topic for discussion. :)

Say, if you ever need inspiration for your collage--altho' you always seem to be bursting w/ ideas =smile=--you could consult all those written-down dreams. I hope you would illustrate that "Midlife Dreams" book with some collages!
