Gunpowder magazine interior, Padley Gorge, Derbyshire

Gunpowder magazine interior, Padley Gorge, Derbyshire
This is the interior of a former gunpowder magazine, used by the local gritstone quarrying industry, in Padley Gorge, near Grindleford, in the Peak District, Derbyshire.

The roof was deliberately constructed in arched brickwork, so that in the event of an accidental explosion, the roof would blow off upwards, leaving the strong gritstone walls relatively unscathed, and therefore easier to repair the damage.
