Treeton Surface Drift construction 16 June 1977

Treeton Surface Drift construction 16 June 1977
This shot shows the portal area of the Surface Drift under construction in 1977. The steel arch girders are being encased in concrete. Eventually this near-surface portion will be covered in colliery spoil and landscaped.

Was this a reclamation project, or was mining still taking place?

This was the construction of the portal for a new surface drift (incline) to supplement the existing two deep shafts for the mine. The drift was progressed by tunnelling into the visible rock face. It went down at a gradient of 1 in 6 to improve access to coal reserves more than 3 km distant. The mine eventually closed in December 1990.
