Hot Springs State Park WY (#0599)

Hot Springs State Park, just outside Thermopolis, WY. This is interesting to visit, but I began to wonder how much the appearance is the result of human intervention (see later pictures) rather than a natural wonder. See also: www.wyomingtourism.org/things-to-do/detail/Hot-Springs-State-Park/2507

One of the clearly not 'natural' components of the park is pools run by a concessionaire (there are also pools managed by the state park).

One of the larger pools from the hot springs. Seeing the blackbird walking in them, I tested the water and it was only lukewarm feeling. The pools are also amazingly evenly-shaped compared to the neighboring terrain.

One of the main reasons I'm suspicious about the terrace formations -- the pools have some sort of man-made linings. (Other pictures (not shown) clearly indicate that this is some sort of heavy rubber or plastic lining.)

Swaying suspension bridge over the Bighorn river and the mineral terraces formed by the hot springs. The bridge was originally built in 1916 but was rebuilt by the Wyoming National Guard in 1992.

Mineral terraces from the hot springs. In the distance the state-operated bath house (the copper dome), and a commercially operated water slide.

Hot Springs State Park WY Tepee fountain(#0615)

06 Aug 2015 3 2 196
Tepee fountain, created in 1909 to vent steam from hot mineral water that was channeled around the park. As the photo in the adjacent picture shows, this did once look like a much narrower tepee.

Description of Tepee Fountain, along with a photo of the fountain over the years since 1909 when it was created.

Thermopolis WY (#0616)

Older building in Thermopolis, and a good reminder that the swastika as a symbol predates its cooption by the Nazis.

Wind River Canyon WY (#0618)

06 Aug 2015 4 2 266
Entering the Wind River Canyon, just south of Thermopolis, WY; the river is the Bighorn. It was a beautiful drive with a number of good places to stop and wonder, but the day was getting late, light for photography was poor, and I had a fair number of miles yet to cover.

Wind River Canyon WY (#0620)

Though a steep and relatively narrow canyon, the elevation change is slight. The river, which runs north (away from me) changes name from Wind River to Bighorn River at some point in the canyon.

At the sound end there are three relatively short highway tunnels. Though barely visible, on the right at about the same level as the highway is a rail tunnel.

Boysen Lake WY (#0625)

Boysen Lake, a reservoir on the south end of Wind River Canyon. Boysen dam (not shown) was finished in 1952 and, per the link below, required a tunnel for the railway that goes under the dam and the highway. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boysen_Reservoir

Red Canyon WY (#0004)

Red Canyon, from a view point on WY-28. A relatively remote but accessible area jointly managed by BLM, private landholders, and Wyoming Game and Fish.

Atlantic City WY (#0005)

07 Aug 2015 1 233
Off of WY-28 are two older mining towns, Atlantic City and South Pass City, both easily accessible via well-graded gravel roads -- both have a small number of year-round residents. This is Atlantic City, nearby South Pass City is a state historical site and has more that is publicly accessible.
