Arizona (mostly)

Folder: Other West
Pictures from various trips to and through Arizona, except: Bisbee -- I've been there a number of times, so that's a separate album. Lower Colorado -- The lower Colorado river area (AZ, CA, and NV south of Las Vegas) feels like a separate and unique culture, fairly often, so those are all a separate album. To insure that photos from the same trip are adjacent, photos are in date order with newe…  (read more)

Phoenix South Mountain Park (1795)

11 Jun 2014 1 2 214
Entrance, museum, and ranger station at South Mountain park in Phoenix (the largest city park in the U.S.). Most of the various public structures, roads, viewpoints, picnic areas, and trails of the park were built by the CCC in the 1930's. The park is huge (16,000 acres) with a road climbing 5.5 miles to an overlook with a spectacular view.

Salome AZ (1793)

11 Jun 2014 2 1 283
"Salome, Arizona 'where she danced'" Sign on the edge of Harcuvar welcoming you to the settlement of Salome. This is in a fairly remote part of Arizona, so it was startling to see an explicit reference to the mythological Salome who in Greek and Christian literature (and in a play by Oscar Wilde) is a symbol of dangerous female seductiveness through dance.

Harcuvar AZ (1792)

Sign for the former Amber Hills motel in Harcuvar, AZ on US 60.

Harcuvar AZ (1791)

11 Jun 2014 3 3 275
Metal stage coach and horses. The field next to the display was filled with all sorts of metal animal sculptures. Per the road signs this small settlement is called Harcuvar (for the nearby mountains), but it also appears to be within the city limits of Salome.

Hope AZ (1790)

11 Jun 2014 1 1217
"Your now beyond Hope", sign as you're leaving Hope, AZ. I've seen pictures where the spelling is correct, so the misspelling here may be somebody's mischief.

Hope AZ (1788)

11 Jun 2014 2 1 241
Junk yard in Hope, AZ on US 60. Both the old tow truck and the junk yard say they're for Parker, AZ, though that doesn't make sense since Parker is 50 miles away.

Hope AZ (1786)

11 Jun 2014 167
Ruins of something. Considering it was right on the edge of US 60 in an area that was once restaurants and motels (before I-10 was built), I'd guess it was the site of a restaurant.

Pinal Air Park, AZ_2772a

20 Jun 2010 2 115
Couldn't get close to get a good view, but I'm still fascinated by these airfields across the west of parked airplanes (see map for aerial view). Best viewed as part of Arizona set.

Phoenix Trotting Park Goodyear, AZ 2777a

20 Jun 2010 2 179
Though quite modern looking and, from I-10, looking only slight worn, this was actually built in 1964 and was only used for about 2.5 seasons. A wonderful example of development gone wrong.... An Internet search on it will find more detailed pictures by others.
