Marianna Confederate Battle (#0615)
Continuing further west along US 90, another town honoring the Confederacy – Confederate Memorial Park, in Marianna, Fl. Which is 41% Black or African-American. The park is the site of the Battle of Marianna, which is described on a plaque in the park. The battle, in September, 1864, involved a large Union force against a smaller and weaker force of Confederate soldiers and local residents, at late point in the war when Marianna was the second largest town (after Tallahassee) in northwest Florida that was still in Union hands; the Union won.
From the monument in the park:
“Battle of Marianna
Sept. 27, 1864
Where overwhelming
Federal forces were
stubbornly resisted
by a home guard of
old men and boys
and a few sick and
wounded Confederates
at home on furlough.
1861-1865
Confederate heroes”
A photo on the third link below is of a reunion of Confederate Veterans at the memorial in 1927.
