NV-722 Old US 50 (0771)
On NV-722, old US 50. Not very far back I had passed a sign saying that this section was not maintained. Considering the narrow gap up ahead, I wondered if I'd soon reach a point where I had to turn back.

SR 722 is one of our favorite scenic routes when we're heading east and don't have to make time. I've assumed that that abandoned maintenance station you've just passed dates from when this was the main alignment of 50.

In the digging around that I did, it wasn't very clear. It seemed like the alignment of US50 and the Lincoln Highway changed more than once re this route versus the more northern route.

I've wondered that too. Maybe it's a bit shorter as the crow flies--but the twisting alignment and grades more than compensate!

Just another note--if you're headed east there's a quick way directly into the Reese River valley without having to go back up to main US 50. Elkhorn road takes off to the right (east) about halfway along the playa and crosses a low pass. It's a good graded road. No gas, tho--be sure to top off at Middlegate!
