Bisbee Gay Pride "Open Carry" gun (2096)

Bisbee Gay Pride "Open Carry" gun (2096)
Not a surprise considering Arizona's "open carry" stance on the right to carry a gun anywhere. BUT, quite a shock to me for a gay pride festival, and worrisome. A young man, looking tough and wandering through the festival with what appeared to be his girlfriend, carrying a gun (on his right, see larger picture for detail). Seemed like a recipe for disaster to me, but no one else at the festival seemed to even notice. The only saving grace seemed to be that if he drew the gun too quickly there was a good chance he'd shoot his own butt (see the larger picture). I later learned that many restaurants and other businesses in Arizona have signs at their entrances saying 'no weapons allowed', but there was no such sign at the entrance to the festival.

Now this is closer to what I'd expect in southern Arizona.

I don't get the motivation here. I understand the self-defense argument and all that, but I've seen nothing in these photographs that suggests Bisbee is a dangerous place. What does this guy think's going to happen to him here? What's he so scared of that he can't just leave it at home on a pretty day?

I guess for some it may become automatic to "pack your pistol" whenever in public, but the event space was clearly marked as gay pride festival. You would think most anyone would know that there is a long history (and continuation) of gays being physically and violently attacked, and thus might think differently about carrying a gun into such a space.

Most guys who go around wearing a pistol strapped to their belt only do so to make a statement, as there's rarely any practical reason for it otherwise. (Maybe they think they're going to suddenly be confronted by a line of rampaging beer cans stacked on fence posts or something.) The question, then, is what statement this guy was trying to make. Was it a general declaration of universal gun rights he makes every day, or was it something specifically targeting the people at the parade? If it was the first, I could see how a history that's still very vivid to gays simply might not have occurred to him. It's just him being him, and he isn't meaning to cause anybody any harm. And based on what I know about Arizona, this would be a reasonable guess. If it was the second option, then that's something far worse. The trouble is there's no way of knowing, though I'm glad nobody tried to find out.
