Silver Lake Pacific Electric right-of-way Wildlife Reserve (1000a)

Silver Lake Pacific Electric right-of-way Wildlife Reserve (1000a)
Update 2/11/2016: An interesting change for a city with a booming housing market -- a significant portion of the former right-of-way seen in this picture is going to become a wildlife reserve! See: www.losfelizledger.com/article/red-car-property-to-become-wildlife-reserve

Previous description:

This is a surprisingly large, and undeveloped, area for a neighborhood of expensive property. This is the former right-of-way for the Pacific Electric Railway Glendale-Burbank line. The north end of this stretch ends at the pilings for what was the line's bridge over Fletcher Dr

(Taken in the area around the Silver Ridge Ave section of the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles)

This is brilliant, and it's one of the big differences between Los Angeles and Chicago. We'd let the corridor collect trash for 30 years, then pave over everything and build some sort of hyper-landscaped bicycle trail. A wildlife reserve would never occur to us.

(It helps to still have wildlife, I suppose.)

Actually, I'm somewhat amazed considering the housing market. It did go empty and trashy since sometime in, I think, the 60's. Possibly one of the reasons they're doing wildlife reserve is that it just above the LA River and there is a concerted push by multiple forces to convert the LA river from a Corp of Engineers concrete channel back into a river with marshes and wetlands.
