Ragwort recklessness
Ragwort is an "injurious weed" under the Weeds Act 1959. It is an offence for a farmer to permit its growth without taking action to eradicate it, if he receives complaints about its presence. Animals, particularly horses, eating it in large quantities, will die painful deaths. It is also toxic to humans and can enter the body by its alkaloidss being absorbed through the skin if pulling it out without protective gloves. Yet here we are, surrounded by acres of it, with horses all around the culprit's fields, in which cattle are grazing.
