Dermasterias imbricata (Leather Star)
Begg Rock, San Nicolas Island, Ventura County, California
Some of the creatures (but not all) in this photo include:
Dermasterias imbricata (Leather Star) is the large tan and orange sea star that is the main subject
Cyamon argon (Rough Orange Encrusting Sponge) is the rough orange area to the right of the Dermasterias imbricata
Metridium senile (White Anemone) are scattered throughout
Ophiothrix spiculata (Spiny Brittle Star) the small star with the long slender arms just below the Dermasterias imbricata and in other spots as well
Crustose corallines (Encrusting Coralline Algae) are the hard purple areas coating the rock
Crassedoma giganteum (Rock Scallop), there are several in the upeer right corner
Ophlitaspongia pennata (Red Encrusting Sponge) are the smooth orange areas above and to the right of the Dermasterias imbricata
Balanus crenatus (Small White Barnacles) are the tiny white things throughout
Patiria miniata (Bat Star) is the dark orange object at the far right
depth: 95 feet (29 meters)
water temperature: 51ºF (11ºC)
