HIBEX

This was an experimental program to develop high acceleration booster technology. The name is an acronym for High Boost Experiment. The program purpose was to develop a motor for the Sprint missile which was to be an anti-ballistic missile interceptor. First tested at White Sands in 1965 the vehicle was fired from both above ground and underground cells.

This two-stage ballistic missile was highly mobile, had a selective range capability and replaced the Redstone missile as the Army's "Sunday Punch." Testing of this nuclear capable missile at White Sands involved off range firings from Fort Wingate, N.M. and several locations in southern Utah like Green River. Matador-Mace

This large missile was about the same size and weight of a small jet fighter. It was capable of carrying a conventional or nuclear warhead. The first Matador launch was in 1955 with the first Mace in 1959. The main difference was in their guidance systems. In Feb. 1958 a Matador was launched from White Sands and flew to Wendover Air Force Base in Utah.
