How very interesting! I was unaware that these buildings had ever been used for this function. Do you know if any old photographs of these times exist and if you can find them online? I am very interested in old photgraphs, especially of areas of Portugal that I have visited.

Fantastic shot! Superb light, angle and atmosphere of abandonment (no people and no cars on sight)! Those lines of buildings were meant to host pilgrims since their construction in the 18th century.
