Halley's udder is getting huge (for a beef cow at least) and you can clearly see her rather lop-sided bulge.

Two days ago Martha's "Volvo" started getting puffy and soft, which is - we've learned - the first sign that the calving is starting. Today she began to discharge stuff that looks like ectoplasm. This means she will either calve within the next day, or has started holding seances.

Martha and her sister Halley are both due to calve any time now, after their brief, polygamous marriage to Tyson the bull (from next door) last November.

Martha eats up the placenta - nothing to lure predators, and extra nutrients for Martha. Icky to watch, though and seems so wrong: watching a cow eat meat, let alone something that just popped out from inside her. Yes yes yes, I know... mother nature knows best!
