guinea fowl eggs!
While weeding near the new bee hive I discovered a nest of guinea fowl eggs! There were four guinea fowl hanging around the hive the day after the bees were installed, and we were concerned that they were going to eat all the bees. I googled it, and indeed, guineas love eating bees. But it said if the entrance is more than 50cm above the ground it should be fine, as they can't be picked off during entry and exit. I figured they were just eating the dead bees (didn't survive the trip) but now we know they were most likely nervously watching over a guinea girl laying an egg. We have removed them because - alas - guineas will not stay on a nest if you try put a cage around them (to protect from inevitable foxes). We allowed a guinea hen to sit on her eggs last time and she was taken after 2 weeks. Recommendation is to incubate the eggs, raise the keets to a month or two and then release. They should join the others.
