Figure 10. 2018

Above: Figure 10. There were five styles of Johnny Berry down tube lettering. STYLE 2 appeared on early frames; it was created by cutting off "& Bentley" from Style 1 lettering (8). STYLE 3 down tube lettering was introduced in 1948, replacing Style 2; Style 3 was commonly used until the mid-1960s and, less often, afterwards (photo by Rick Hart). STYLE 4 lettering first appeared in 1957; it was used on down tubes as an alternative to Style 3, and was also used on top tubes in conjunction with Style 3 or Style 5 down tube lettering (photo by Bob Hovey). STYLE 5 first appeared in the early-1960s as an alternative to Styles 3 and 4 (11). After the mid-1960s, Style 5 was commonly used, appearing on 2 in every 3 frames. STYLE 6 might have been intended primarily for track frames, but was rarely, if ever, used (photo by Rick Hart).

Figure 6. 2018

Above: Figure 6. TOP ROW: Only 3 lug sets were widely used by Berry from 1950 until the end of production in 1974: (A1) Oscar Egg Super Champion lugs (photo by Rick Hart). (A2) Nervex Professional lugs (photo by Toni Theilmeier). (A3) Prugnat Type-S lugs (photo by Guy Taylor). BOTTOM ROW: Not all frames were built with the 3 common lug sets pictured in the top row. Pictured in the bottom row are two examples of atypical lugs: (B1) Berry’s 1953 display frame featured delicate, hand-cut, symmetrical fleurs-des-lis and fretwork (photo by Bob Hovey). (B2) Berry used Prugnat 62/S lug sets to build a few frames, including this 1969 road frame (Photo by Colin Petty).
