08 Apr 2020 5 2 405
A photo of people looking right at you for the Vintage Photos Theme Park. And this doubles as a photo for the Vintage Photos Theme Park monthly topic of the 1960s (submit a photo on this topic each week in addition to—or instead of—a photo for the weekly topic). Yet another snapshot of those Quizzical Kids in Easter Costumes , who were celebrating Easter and springtime in 1963.

Smiling Mother with Wide-Eyed Baby

10 May 2020 3 1 305
A mothers and babies photo for the Vintage Photos Theme Park. A fashionably dressed mother with a gentle smile poses for a picture as she holds her baby, who's staring in wide-eyed astonishment at something off camera. This is an undated real photo postcard from Paris, France (based on a partial address— Ave. de Neuilly —stamped on the other side). See also the full version of this photo.

Savage Elementary School, Grade 3, 1964-65

31 May 2020 2 2 367
An elementary school photo taken by a professional photographer for the Vintage Photos Theme Park. Sign: "Savage Elementary School, Mrs. Rhoads, Grade 3, 1964-65." Studio name on accompanying photo folder: "Mealey - Maryland." Although some students undoubtedly find their school to be a savage and unforgiving place, the name of this Savage Elementary School came from its location in the town of Savage , Maryland. The students have assembled in the library for their class photo. Some of the books on display on the top shelf behind them include Hercules: The Story of an Old-Fashioned Fire Engine (1940), A Fly Went By (1958), The Little Twin (1953), Stagecoach Sam (1940), and Caps for Sale (1940). Many of the students are wearing red-colored clothing, but the boy standing at the end of the fourth row in the upper right-hand corner of the photo is dressed in a grey shirt and pants with a "U.S. Army" patch over one shirt pocket. Similarly, the boy sitting on the floor at the end of the first row in the lower right-hand corner is wearing a blue uniform-like outfit with an "Air Force" patch on his shirt. Finally, notice how the boy at the end of the third row closed his eyes and scrunched up his face as the photographer snapped the picture.

Doubly Cute, 1949

19 Jul 2020 5 2 263
A blurry but charming photo for the Vintage Photos Theme Park. A double exposure featuring a cute kid with a big smile sitting in the foreground along with a ghostly mom and the kid's blurry doppelgänger lurking in the background. The photo is dated 1949 in the lower right-hand corner. For more charming blurriness, see Misty Shores of Memory and Fuzzy Dog .

Fiddling on the Porch

09 Aug 2020 3 3 212
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the monthly theme of pick your favorite theme(s)—why is it (are they) your favorite(s)? (submit a photo on this topic each week in addition to—or instead of—a photo for the weekly topic). I've always enjoyed photos of musicians, musical instruments, and other musical topics, especially informal ones like this picture of a boy playing a fiddle on the porch of a rustic house (see a cropped version for a slightly enlarged view). This is an unused real photo postcard with an Azo stamp box (four corner triangles pointing up) on the other side that suggests a date that may be as early as 1904 to 1918. The name "Sam Lewis" is written on the verso, though I haven't been able to track down any information about a fiddler by that name. For some other interesting music photos, see Frank Meger's Miniature Masquerade Ball and The Olzen Accordion School, Brooklyn, N.Y.

Vacation Bible School, St. John's Lutheran Church,…

06 Sep 2020 2 295
A religious photo for the Vintage Photos Theme Park. "St. John's Lutheran Church, 12th Daily Vacation Bible School, 7-1-36, Slatington, Pa." A real photo postcard of the children and adults who participated in a vacation Bible school at St. John's Lutheran Church in Slatington , Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, on July 1, 1936. It wasn't until I attempted to count the number of people in the photo—there are about 215—that I realized that this is a montage combining two or more images. A close-up of part of the photo makes the montage obvious.

A detail from a photo of the participants in a vacation Bible school at St. John's Lutheran Church in Slatington, Pennsylvania, in 1936.The children in the top half of the image look like giants compared to the ones in the lower half, which makes it obvious that this is a montage of two or more different photos. For the full real photo postcard, see Vacation Bible School, St. John's Lutheran Church, Slatington, Pa., July 1, 1936 .

Women in Suburbia, 1963

13 Sep 2020 2 2 287
A fashion (in its day) photo for the Vintage Photos Theme Park. This is a Kodachrome slide processed by Kodak in July 1963. The image shows two women and a small child posing for a photo among the orderly lawns and houses of a 1960s suburban development. The older woman is dressed up in a patterned dress, necklace, and earrings, while the younger one is wearing a striped cover over her dress. The woman on the left is named Ethel (last name unknown), and she appears in other slides that I purchased along with this one. See, for instance, Ethel's Oil Painting, 1967 .

A Little Girl with a Big Bow—Mirror Photo

28 Dec 2020 6 4 248
Printed on the back of this unused real photo postcard: "Atlantic City Souvenir. Myers-Cope Co., 1635 & 1521 Boardwalk, Atlantic City, N.J." On the other side of the card is an Azo stamp box (squares in each of the four corners) that suggests a date sometime in the 1920s, 1930s, or 1940s. The little girl in this mirror photo (or "photo-multigraph") is posing with her right hand against one of the mirrors, which makes it look like she's holding hands with her other multiple selves. The real girl, of course, is facing away from the camera, and the remaining four images are mirror reflections. For another photo with a similar subject, see Mirror Photograph of Girl with Bow, Pittsburgh, Pa. For more examples, see my album of Mirror Photos .

Grandma and Grandpa Take the Cake

01 Nov 2020 3 2 264
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of grandma and grandpa (grandparent(s) featured in a family photo) . A grandmother and grandfather hold a two-tiered cake as they pose for a photo with their grandson. All three of them are wearing flowers in their coat and jacket lapels. The presence of the cake and flowers makes me wonder if the grandparents are celebrating a special wedding anniversary. Given how the cake is tilted, I just hope that it didn't slide off onto the grandson's head!

The boxes include one for a Tonka toy car carrier and another for a "Reflection 3 Pc. Chip 'n' Dip Set." For a cowgirl with her toy horse, see Riding Toward the Sun: Dale Evans and Buttermilk .
