Six Gun City, 1960

22 Oct 2023 2 60
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of color photos or slides . This is a Kodachrome slide dated August 1960 that features a covered wagon that once stood in front of Six Gun City, a Western-themed attraction located in Jefferson, New Hampshire. The theme park opened in 1957 and offered staged gunfights, cowboys on horseback, and pony rides. The park continued in operation until 2014. The Legends of America web site provides a brief history of Six-Gun City, Jefferson, New Hampshire . For a short home movie that shows the covered wagon, see 1962 Six Gun City & Santa Village - New Hampshire . For a current view of the Six Gun City site, see the Google Maps image from July 2023.

On the Brooklyn Bridge Looking toward New York Cit…

15 Oct 2023 5 1 54
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of caught unaware . A handwritten note on the other side of this photo explains the location: "On the Brooklyn Bridge looking towards N.Y. City. The World building being visible through the left hand arch." The Brooklyn Bridge opened in 1883, and the New York World Building was completed in 1890. It's likely that this card-mounted photograph (a 3½-by-4½-inch photo on a 4¼-by-5¼-inch card) dates to the 1890s or 1900s. The five pedestrians -- all men -- visible in the photo don't appear to be aware that their picture has been taken. See also the full version of this photograph.

Pennsylvania State Policeman

01 Oct 2023 2 1 59
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of police officers . A Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) trooper holds a cigarette in his right hand as he leans against a car to pose for a picture. His uniform includes a keystone-shaped PSP patch on his left shoulder, and he has a PSP campaign-style hat (worn with the strap in the front underneath the chin). Beyond the trooper and car is a brick building with a Texaco Star gas pump. There's no date on the photo, and I haven't been able to determine where the photo may have been taken.

A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of a tabletop or desktop and the things on it . Handwritten note on the other side of this snapshot: "This is my work bench in the supply office." This is an undated snapshot of a desk or workbench in an unidentified "supply office." Arranged on the desk are a pen in a holder, a travel alarm clock, some sort of metal boxes, another pen, an ashtray, a large photo of a woman, a desk calendar, another ashtray (this one full of cigarette butts), a telephone, and a half empty cigarette pack. Ten or more photos and documents are visible through the glass that covers most of the desktop. Paper trays are mounted on the wall to the right of the desk, and a pencil sharpener attached to the wall above the desk is partially visible on the left.

Boxing Match in the Gym, 1914

17 Sep 2023 2 2 66
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of sporting events or competitions . Handwritten caption: "Gym Interior. '14." Two men are taking part in a boxing match as a small group of onlookers surround them. That's what I thought this small photo showed until I scanned and enlarged it. It turns out that the two young men in the middle are just pretending to throw punches, and eight others are watching the boxers or pretending to engage in their own exercises. One fellow is just standing with his arms crossed, another is lifting small wooden dumbbells on either side of his head, a third is starting to climb a pole, and two guys are getting ready to throw Indian clubs. At the far end of the gym behind the main group is a fellow sitting on a pommel horse. The blurred figure on the left is someone else who was walking or running as the photo was taken, and a tenth young man is sitting by himself near the piano in the right-hand corner. There's no indication, unfortunately, where this gym may have been located.

10 Sep 2023 5 2 68
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of sitting on the grass . Handwritten message on the other side: "To Kate. I suppose you know who these are. Ellsworth and his wife. I've forgot whether I've ever sent you any before or not but will send this any-way." This real photo postcard bears no date or postmark, but the type of Azo stamp box (with four corner triangles pointing up) printed on the other side suggests that it dates between 1904 and 1918.

03 Sep 2023 3 6 77
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of perfect family portrait (family members trying to look good) . Photographer's name on this nineteenth-century cabinet card photograph: "F. B. Zay, Findlay, O. FBZ." Frederick B. Zay (1842-1910) of Findlay, Ohio, took this photo of an unidentified family. The parents and their nine children are all nicely dressed, and the photographer has arranged them carefully in front of a nondescript backdrop.

A. F. Moore, M.D., Winsted, Connecticut, ca. 1883

27 Aug 2023 2 1 55
Dr. Arthur F. Moore (1843-1924) used this colorful leaf-shaped trade card to advertise his medical practice in Winsted, Connecticut. Moore occasionally contributed notes about medical topics that appeared in the United States Medical Investigator (prior to 1875 the title of the periodical was simply the Medical Investigator ). Since the published pieces included his name and location, they document the different places he lived. Notes that Moore contributed in 1872 and 1873, for instance, listed his residence as Lyons, Wisconsin. By 1877 he had moved to Sandy Hill, New York. In 1883 he was in Winsted, Connecticut, where he handed out copies of this trade card. A year later, he was in Bridgewater, Vermont, and then in 1886 he ended up in in Ludlow, Vermont. For another leaf-shaped trade card, see The Livermore Pen, Stylographic Pen Co., Boston, Mass. A. F. Moore, M.D. Office in Park Place Hours 1 to 2 & 6 to 8 P.M. Residence 141 Main Street, Winsted, Ct.

27 Aug 2023 2 61
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of hot hot heat (sweating, sweltering, melting) . Handwritten caption: "Bone Dry. New Mexico." This is an unused real photo postcard with an Azo stamp box (four corner triangles with two pointing up and two pointing down) on the other side, which suggests a date that may be as early as 1917 to 1930. For another sweltering situation, see Hot Meal, July 1914 .
