Do we know why the hotel was made to look like a ship? I think it's neat -- never seen one like that.

In The Ship Hotel: A Grand View along the Lincoln Highway (Mechanicsburg, Pa.: Stackpole Books, 2010), author Brian Butko quotes a 1930s WPA guide to explain the reason for the ship: "The S.S. Grand View Point Hotel was remodeled in 1931 to give the impression of an ocean liner, because the owner saw a resemblance between early morning mists rising from the valley and billowing ocean waves."

Butko also said, "The Ship Hotel was perhaps the best-known roadside attraction on the coast-to-coast Lincoln Highway." Unfortunately, the deteriorating structure burned down in 2001 as plans were underway for a group to purchase the property and restore the building.

Interestingly enough, another ship-shaped hotel--the Fulton Steamboat Inn--opened in 1990 near Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It's situated just off of the Lincoln Highway (Route 30) at a site that's about 150 miles east of where the original Ship Hotel once stood.
