The block carved "1903" presumably relates to restoration work on this section in that year; I saw a similar block with "1904" carved in it.

Tintern Abbey was founded in 1131 by Sir Walter fitz Richard of Clare, the second Cistercian Abbey in Britain. It was destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th Century, by Henry VIII. Today an inspired ruin in the Wye Valley, it has inspired the likes of Wordsworth and Turner.
