Cape Coast Castle was originally built by the Swedes as one of forty commercial "slave castles" along the Gold Coast (now Ghana) to act as holding depots for slaves awaiting shipping to the Americas. It passed into Danish ad then Dutch hands before being seized by the British in 1664. A British governor George MaClean served there from 1830 to 1844; during his tenure he cleared 200 miles of West African coast of the slave trade.

An old cemetery in St Peter Port, now very crowded, with some impressive tombs.
