Cornwall River Authority Water Level Indicator, River Cober, Coronation Park, Helston, Cornwall 25 April 2015

Cornwall River Authority Water Level Indicator, River Cober, Coronation Park, Helston, Cornwall 25 April 2015
A Cornwall River Authority water level indicator on the River Cober at the back of the Boating Lake and Coronation Park.

River authorities were established from the Land Drainage Act, 1930. CRA was absorbed into the South West Water Authority in 1973.

The Cober, said to derive its name from "Cobra", i.e. serpentine in its course, rises at Carmenellis, and flows into Loe Pool near Porthleven. 1n 1302 it was navigable, and used to provide power for 32 wheels, mainly for milling flour. There was also a tin streaming works further upstream, in Helston Lowertown. No wheels are left today. Although normally little more than a stream, when swollen it has caused flooding in Lower Town. The first bridge here was built in 1260.
