Varteg Road Cemetery, Blaenavon, Pontypool 5 July 2014
Proof that before Royal Marine Commandos, these special forces were from the army. No 1 Commando was formed with the others, in July 1940, from army personnel with the aim of harassing the enemy in his European stronghold. Of interest is the fact that one of the teams on No 1 Commando's first raid was led by a Lieutenant Scaramanga - an unusual name! No 1 Commando saw service in Europe, North Africa, India and Burma. Demolition experts of 1 Commando were selected for, and took part in, Op Chariot "The Greatest Raid of All", on the lock gates at St Nazaire in March 1942.
The cemetery, on the mountain on the outskirts of Blaenavon, was opened in the early 20th Century and today is in two halves, the original and a newish extension with plenty of burial space.
