Fulbourn - Chafy Row, Apthorpe Street 2014-11-12

Fulbourn - Chafy Row, Apthorpe Street 2014-11-12
Early C19 cottages, formerly owned (and perhaps built for) Dr William Chafy, who was Master of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, from 1813 to 1843, and a royal chaplain. Chafy owned the farm behind the cottages [according to Don Crane, Walks around Fulbourn (1986), p.5] and it looks as if he took the opportunity to develop the street frontage - according to a Cambridge contemporary, Chafy's "covetousness ... in many respects was almost inconceivable", although he was generous towards his College [Sidney Sussex College: historical essays in commemoration of the quatercentenary (1996), pp.151, 157].
