Speckled Wood - Pararge aegeria

Speckled Wood - Pararge aegeria
The Speckled Wood - Pararge aegeria - is a common butterfly found throughout the whole of Eurasia and can be seen in gardens, hedgerows and especially in or near woodland where, as its name suggests, it is most often found. It is fond of perching with spread wings in pools of sunlight where it can look for predators, intruders or possibly a future mate. They feed on Aphid honeydew in the treetops and are only seen on flowers early or late in the year when there are few aphids. This one was seen near Carr Mill Dam.
