Black Darter - Sympetrum danae

Black Darter - Sympetrum danae
This is the lovely Black Darter - Sympetrum danae - which is also known as the Black Meadowhawk. This dragonfly can be found in heathland and other areas which have boggy pools with rushes, reeds and mosses throughout northern Europe, Asia and Northern America. This is a male which is predominantly darker than the female which is similar to the Common Darter in appearance. This one was seen at the Three Sisters recreational area near Wigan.
