Juvenile Dunnock - Prunella modularis
The Dunnock - Prunella modularis - is a small bird native to much of Europe and was introduced into New Zealand in the nineteenth century. Also known as the Hedge Sparrow or Hedge Warbler, this lovely little bird is roughly the size of a European Robin or small House Sparrow and can be found in a variety of habitats especially gardens and hedgerows. They are mainly ground feeders eating insects, seeds, worms and spiders and even when bird feeders are used you will rarely see them flying up to them, preferring to hop around on the grass looking for leftovers. This juvenile was seen visiting our garden.
