A Bouquet Of Dogs

The very lovely Dog Rose - Rosa canina - also known as Dogberry and Witches Briar, is a shrub which can also climb to the tops of trees in order to gain sunlight. Its name came about because in Roman times, it was believed that the plant's root could cure the bite of a mad (or rabid) dog. The hips are used for various medicinal purposes as well as for various culinary delights too. It is native to Europe, northwest Africa and western Asia but is now found in many other parts of the world and is considered an invasive species in the high country of New Zealand. This one was seen by the side of Carr Mill Dam, St Helens, Merseyside.
