The Carniolan Honey Bee - Apis mellifera carnica - is also known as the Grey Bee and is a subspecies of the western (or European) Honey Bee -Apis mellifera. It is native to Slovenia, southern Austria, Romania, Bulgaria, and Croatia and is very popular among beekeepers for many reasons. It is noted for its very long tongue, (6.5 to 6.7 mm), which is very well adapted for clover and other hard to reach flowers.
The flower is Tragopogon pratensis, otherwise known as Goat's Beard and Jack-go-to-bed-at-noon (because they only open in the morning sunshine).
The picture was shot by the roadside in Obzor, Bulgaria, I spotted the Bee on the flower but just as I was taking the shot, it flew up and away so a lucky catch for me.
