Peacock Pansy - Junonia almana
The beautiful Peacock Pansy - Junonia almana - Butterfly is found in a wide variety of habitats in south Asia including forest clearings, thorn scrub, palm-fringed beaches, dry woodlands, arable farmland and gardens. With a wingspan of 54–62 mm, (2.1–2.4 in), the adult butterfly has amazing eye spots on the wings which helps in protection against birds who peck on the eye spots assuming them to be head of the butterfly. They like to bask for several minutes at a time on the ground or on low foliage, especially if the weather is cloudy but they are quite nervous, and if approached they flit rapidly into the air and circle around, before settling again, typically well out of reach. Unfortunately, this was the best shot I could get of it. Spotted near the side of the road on Chandranath Hill, Goa, India.
