Garden Tiger moth (Arctia caja) caterpillar
I am currently rearing this larva at home. It is about half an inch (about 12mm) long, and I think it's in its third instar. Ever since I was young, I've referred to these larvae as "furballs", and bearing in mind that they tightly curl up when disturbed, this pic shows clearly from where that name came. ;-) More widely, they are known as "woolly bears", again, a nice self-expanitory name.
