'Stalin's birthday cake', Rabbit and a little bit of a HFF
Rabbit is now in Riga. Here he is exploring the 'Moscow suburb' area of the city, which has a distinctive Russian character. The green and gold arch and decorative 'fence'(!) belong to a Russian Orthodox church, and behind Rabbit is the Latvian Academy of Sciences. It was built between 1951 and 1961, when Latvia was part of the USSR. It was the first skyscraper in Latvia. and at the time one of the highest concrete buildings in the world. The design is similar to that of seven other 'Stalin's skyscrapers' in Moscow (and the Warsaw Palace of Culture and Science, which Rabbit visited around ten years ago), and is known locally by various names, including 'Stalin's birthday cake' and 'the Kremlin'.
