Samuel Beckett Bridge Dublin
The newest Liffey bridge links Macken Street with North Wall Quay and is due to open in December 2009. When completed it will have four traffic and two pedestrian lanes.
It will also be capable of opening through an angle of 90 degrees allowing ships to pass through. The architect is Santiago Calatrava, a designer of a number of innovative bridges and buildings. This will be the second Liffey bridge designed by Calatrava, the first being the James Joyce Bridge, which is further upriver.
The shape of the spar and its cables is to depict the image of a Harp - one of Ireland's national symbols.
