Family farms in the midwest have been dying since the 1980's. We barely survived the 20% interest rates ourselves. As farmers retire, the land is sold to larger operations who have no interest in maintaining the property...

A similar situation in my area (western France), except that old houses are often sold to people who are restoring them, so they have the chance for a second life...
